Peter Filkins is a poet, translator, and the Richard B. Fisher Professor of Literature Emeritus at Simon's Rock at Bard College. He has published five books of poetry, the most recent being Water / Music. His translations from German include Ingeborg Bachmann's collected poems, Darkness Spoken, Elias Canetti's The Book Against Death, and three novels by H.G. Adler, Panorama, The Journey, and The Wall. Filkins, who has been the recipient of a Berlin Prize and of fellowships from the James Merrill House, Leon Levy Center for Biography, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Guggenheim Foundation, is currently at work on a biography of Bachmann, to be published by Yale University Press.
