Alastair Noble

Alastair Noble was born in the UK but lived and worked in New York for over 40 years. Noble now splits his time between New York and Scotland, where he opened DunoonMOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), a gallery in Dunoon that focuses in Text Art Visual Poetry and the Book Arts.

He identifies himself as an environmental/installation artist and book artist and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally including in the US, Italy, Peru, Chile, Bulgaria, Denmark and the UK. Noble’s artistic practice is a response to architecture and the natural environment, and reflects on particular sites in the context of poetry and literature. The writings of Mallarmé, Marinetti, Mayakovsky, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Borges, Poe and Daumal have been the genesis of numerous projects. These authors’ texts are transposed into drawings, prints, sculptures, installations and interventions in the landscape. He also produces and exhibits limited edition Artist’s Books that often ruminate on his large-scale works. Noble established Gnōbilis Press as a means to promote and distribute his artist's books and prints.

Noble was the recipient of a Calouste Gulbenkian Grant (For Art in the Public Realm), Scottish National Heritage Grant, and the K2 Family Foundation Award USA. He has undertaken numerous public art commissions both in the US and abroad, including Land – Shape for land art in Hobro Denmark in collaboration with his wife Kathy Bruce.

Over the years has taught and lectured at numerous colleges, universities and other public institutions. Periodically, Noble writes on architecture, poetry and the book arts for art journals, magazines and catalogues most recently for the Blue NoteBook published by UWE Bristol.
